JEEP HISTORY
My first ‘dirt bike’ was a
Tote Gote when I was about 8 years old.
Off roading took off from there. Among
other 4x4’s I’ve had over the
decades, one of the best was a 1946
Willies High hood set up for mud racing.
It had a Corvette LT1, Saginaw racing
clutch, sealed military ignition system
for full immersion, 6 point racing
harnesses, and an air intake mounted at
the top of the full racing roll cage. Its
tires were tractor bar treads mounted on
special made 17.5 inch rims. (The tires
are normally used on irrigation circle
systems) And, yes, I do regret having sold
it even though it had to be trailered to
the woods. (It was anything BUT highway
legal!) My current Jeep is a Commander,
and it replaces a 2000 Dodge Durango. The
Durango was bought when I replaced a Ford
F-350 diesel truck and travel trailer with
a 40 foot Safari motorcoach powered by a 9
liter Caterpillar diesel. At the time, I
wanted/needed a 4-door 4x4, so that ruled
out a CJ. (The Wrangler Unlimited
didn’t exist yet) I have been
eyeballing the new 4-door Wranglers, but
was ‘ruined’ by a test drive
of the Commander. Naturally, my
‘new’ Jeep needs to rival the
motorcoach in creature comforts and
leather everything. The 2006 Commander
Limited was a lease return and I
couldn’t pass up the deal.
