I grew up street racing...the real
kind...not the F&F-proported
crap.
After I started getting into too
much trouble, I began looking for another
method of vehicular kicks.
Bought a YJ
in '05 because I thought topless at the
lake would be fun. From there it just went
NUTS!!!
First -
1992 YJ bought dirt
cheap.
4cyl 5spd. (had to swap the engine
out due to excessive oil
burning)
31" ATs on black AR767
steelies.
I gave it a 2" spring pack
and 1" shackles.
Then, I wrapped it
around a tree during ice storm in
'06.
With insurance money, paid cash for
the current Jeep.
1997 TJ.
4.0 6cyl /
5spd.
Bought bone stock with 31" STS
on Eagle Alloys.
After several trades, I
now have 2" BB and MT Classic's in
33" LTBs.
No sway bar, so to clear,
I shaved the front fenders 1 1/2 in and
the rears 1/2 in to help
"match".
I bought an SRC rear
bumper with hitch and tire carrier ($200
for both!! I love craigslist.com)
I put a
RockReady intake on it, just because it
was a free scavange off the Jeep my
brother-in-law bought (see below).
I've
also fabbed a cargo rack setup that is
removable, a CB/accessory rack that mounts
from windshield to main hoop in the
center, and my crowning acheivement, the
front bumper. I cut the length down to
44" to clear the path for the LTB's
and put 30* angles on the ends. I had
gussets welded on the end, as well as a
couple on the inside, to help the rigid
strength of the bumper. It isn't a Warn
1/4" steel bumper by any means, but I
don't exactly bash it against boulders,
either. I also welded a hoop on the front,
stinger style. It was going to just be a
light bar, but I ended up getting a part
"donated" from the throughout
bin at a local aeronautics lab and it was
so strong that, once I had it welded at
the frame mount points on the bumper, it
serves as a recovery point as well.
Other than that, I've got a pair of KC
Daylighters mounted on the windshield and
a pair on the bumper. The stocks are on the
light bar.
I've kept it pretty simple
and extremely cheap up to this point.
Since most of what we see are forest
trails, I have yet to need any EXTREME
flex. The one thing I look forward to
(realistically) soon is probably just a
lock-rite in the rear.
My sister has an
'02 TJ with 2" BB and 31's and by
brother-in-law just recently bought a '98
with 3.5" RE, 33x12.5 tires on Black
ProComp wheels, ARB front bumper with Warn
8.5ti and a rear bumper that looks to have
been a home-grown build, but it does work
fine.
After I got my TJ, my
father-in-law got himself an '00 (which is
where I got the 2" BB and M/T wheels)
and is now selling it, because he bought a
'98. Not sure why he changed, other than
wanting a hard top.
UPDATE
::
Tired of DD'ing the TJ...ESPECIALLY
with 33" boggers. I reevaluated the
frequency at which we actually hit the
trails and the level of difficulty we
usually tackle, not to mention other
aspects of life in general, and came to
the conclusion that, where function
precedes form, I would do better in a
space-ample SUV and that the novelty of
toplessness has worn its welcome.
So,
amidst all that, I ended up trading the TJ
in on an '02 WJ with the 4.7 HO V8 and
Quadra-drive. Fully loaded. I'm VERY
happy, so far.
I think it is 90%
"finished" as far as what I want
out of it right now. UC springs and a
2" BB give it enough clearance for
the 245/75/17 BFG's on JK Rubi wheels.
It's got the generic style of brush guard
(made by several different companies) and
a blackwidow cargo rack.
