JEEP HISTORY
No other vehicle makes me smile as much
as a Wrangler does. Maybe it's because I
was a goofy, pigtailed 10 year old when I
first rode in one. My cool neighbors,
Denny and Barbara, had a red '65 and they
would make room for me and their dog,
Stretch, to ride along when they took to
the hills around our neighborhood. Top and
windshield down, I had never seen or
ridden in anything like that
Wrangler! Since those glory days of
youth, I've learned a lot about checking,
researching and buying vehicles. From a
1971 Fiat 850 Spyder to a 1967 Pontiac
Firebird, there was nothing like
experience to make me wiser. I learned to
stay away from Italian cars, no matter how
cheap, and rust is rust that no amount of
duct tape can hide, as was the case of my
Firebird. Things got more fun when I
accessed the mind of a 10-year-old who
rode in a red Jeep. Here's my 4-wheel
history that started with the
Landcruiser! 1985 FJ 60 -- Bought new
in 1986 -- traded my 1982 Toyota Mojave
pickup for it. Kept it for 12 years.
Should NEVER have let it slip
away. 1977 FJ 40 -- Bought this for
$5,000.00 in 2006. I invested in some
major body welding (floor plate, body
seams, etc.). Then I realized the rust I
could see was just the tip of the, ah,
"rustberg." And I wasn't rich.
I sold it, at a profit, thanks to my adult
son's selling skills. 1982 YJ Islander
-- Bought in early 2007 for $3,000 at a
local dealer's lot. A great mechanic in
town kept this 4-cylinder going for me,
but I had to move to a new town and knew
nobody, much less a good mechanic. 1982
Jeep Cherokee -- Bought this later in 2007
in the new town where I knew nobody. Was
supposed to be my reliable backup. It
wasn't. Sold it after three months, again,
thanks to my older son's sales
talent. 1984 Jeep Sahara -- Out of the
frying pan into the fire decision. It had
been towed improperly behind a motorhome
which caused axle problems. I didn't know
that right away, I trusted the car
salesman. Fixed that but things got worse
when I bought new tires and wheels at a
local shop. The driver's side tire fell
right off while I was driving down a busy
midtown street. Apparently, the tire
center forgot to torque the lug nuts. They
apologized, same thing happened to more
than just my vehicle that week, they say
but I lost my confidence in the Sahara and
traded it away. Three years later . .
. January 2011 -- Just bought my 1997
Wrangler sport in a beautiful, gunmetal
pearl hue. Everything checks out but there
is this teeny tiny surge issue I will ask
you all about soon. Let me bask in the
'glow' a little longer before reality and
that monthly payment arrive. So, I'm
back among my people. Please wave to me
when you see me!!!
