JEEP HISTORY
Its friggin cold where I live and it snows
like a *****. My 99 Subaru (Chitty-****ty
bang-bang) finaly died.. rust and a head
gasket..the left rear strut blew through
the body and the only thing holding it
place was the axle and lower control arm.
I figuered it was gunna break in half
soon. I needed a good all wheel drive
and was looking at Subaru's and they are
so crazy expensive at even 175k miles! I
saw my 2002 Jeep G/C Larado and the price
was so close to what i had to spend. I
negotiated a great price..$3,800 and it
had 140k on her. The guy needed to
sell..bad. But lied of course (the ol'
buyer beware) I was told, the truck needs
nothing...cept the passenger window
regulator. I was rushed and didnt get to
go over it with a fine tooth comb. He
acted like this young family man who's Dad
beat vehical maintance into his head.
The jeep had a l/f outer tie rod end about
to fall out of the socket, rear brakes
sounded like they where full of rocks
after driving awhile (needed pads and
springs) The lifter noise was above
acceptable, even for a 4.0. I did and oil
change with mopar filter, Rotella 15-30w
and a zink additive for the flat tappets.
They tap briefly at start up, then gets
quite, then noises come back and it purrs
like Cat diesel...a muffled Cat diesel.
It was also down 2 quarts of trans oil,
valve cover leak, oil pressure gauge is
pegged (cleaned it, no help) and a handful
of dash bulbs out (why?) also the heater
select knob was smashed flush with the
dash (fix that one myself..lots of springs
in that baby! Boing..!) No the rear end
darts side to side at will and when coming
off the gas. Reminds me of my drinking
days. Its gunna need the rear upper
control arm bushings and of course the
ball joint for good measure....just gunna
bolt an arm. My intial opinion of the
G/C from an owners view.. not as a tech
like the ol days. Cool vehical, kinda
upscale for a 4x4, rides pretty good for a
"Jeep". Love the bells and
whistles and power everything. Just wish i
would have held out for a Jeep with
heated seats.
