JEEP HISTORY
My first Jeep was a 52 Willys pickup with
a flat bed and 4 cyl F head 134 that was
perfect for hauling our dirt bikes around.
Sold that to buy my wife a car. Later with
children and needing more vehicle space
and having more car knowledge than money
came across a 77 Jeep Cherokee for $400.00
with no motor. Had a Chevy 283 core laying
around so I built it up and put it in the
Jeep. To my surprise the transmission was
a GM TH400 but with an AMC bell housing
pattern. Called the local trans shop and
they sold me a Chevy TH400 case for
$25.00. Never messed with an auto trans
before but I thought "what the
heck"! Swapped the guts from the
AMC TH400 to the Chevy TH400 and the 283
bolted right up! Was a great family car
and fun wheeler. Later, we purchased an
old travel trailer. The 283 just didn't
have the cubes to haul all that weight so
I found a 454 Chev that I built and
squeezed it in. What a fantastic motor.
The Cherokee passed everything but a gas
station! But alas... lost it in a divorce.
Fast forward 16 years to present. I found
a decent 1979 CJ-7 that needed a little
tlc that is currently down to bare frame.
I have been doing research, buying parts,
and generally learning everything I can
which brought me to this site after
receiving an invite from Old Rugged
Crosser on Bulltear.com.
