I started my Jeep life in 1976 with the
purchase of a new CJ-5! It had only one
option, a 304 V-8 in place of the standard
engine. There started my love of simple
mechanical devices without extra fluff for
fluffs sake!
Next came a new 1989
Wrangler with the 4 cylinder.
Interestingly, it returned poorer fuel
economy than the 304. Probably because I
had the accelerator on the floor about 1/2
of time in order to match traffic flow!
I only kept it for about 6 months before
realizing my error.
Number 3 was a new
1995 Cherokee Sport with the 4.0 and
Automatic that I still own and has proven
to be the most trouble free vehicle I have
ever had. (I lube the Door Hinges) It
has 240,000 miles and it is never driven
without hitting Red Line on the Tach at
least once! Just last week, I ran it
wide open throttle from stopped all the
way to 90mph and it never flickered.
Never been into the Engine, Transmission,
Transfer Case or either Differential due
to running Mobil 1 Synthetic in all five
since new and changing it
regularly!
And finally, in 2002 I
realized that I wanted another REAL Jeep!
I found a survivor 1986 CJ-7 that needed
nothing other than 'tinkering' to make it
perfect again. 258 cid I-6, T-176 and
Dana 300 with no modifications since new,
no crashes and no rust. I brought it
home, removed the soft top and stored it
away, and drive it any time the weather
permits!
