JEEP HISTORY
I bought my first Jeep in 1998. It was a
1959 Willy's CJ-5 which was mostly all
original. I had bought this to use mainly
off-road with very little street use. In
2000 I purchased a 1991 YJ Sahara which
was completely original and looked like
new. It had been garage kept its whole
life and never used off-road. I had
planned to use it as my daily driver with
occasional off-road use. After driving it
for about 6 months and swapping the street
tires for a set of 30x9.50 BFG Mud
Terrains, I quickly realized that it was
much better off-road than the '59 Willy's
and I got very good at wheeling it on
logging trails with open diffs and no
lift. In 2007 I decided to sell the '59
that had not been driven much since
purchasing the YJ and put all of that
money into the '91. The '91 YJ has been
through a lot since I purchased it and I
am glad to say I will never get rid of it.
The frame is still rust free and you can
still read the build date stamped into the
left rear corner near the shackle mount. I
have learned a lot about working on Jeeps
thanks to the YJ. I think the best part of
'91-'06 Wranglers is that the parts are so
interchangeable. Like my ZJ engine, XJ
transfer case and axles, to my TJ front
driveshaft & wheels. The YJ currently
has 172,000 miles on it and I will not
hesitate to drive it from North Carolina
to Utah,Nevada,& California for many
years to come.
