JEEP HISTORY
1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic Bought it to
have a beater 4x4 and then got carried
away.... It had 150k miles
(surprisingly low for this model), three
inch lift but stock wheels/tires, oil
leaks from anywhere there was an oil seal,
caved in roof, sagging headliner, various
dents and scratches, three out of four
bumper ends damaged, bent rear bumper, and
other little issues you'd expect for a
Jeep. Right after purchase I found a
wrecked one and bought it. Same mileage
and color so I planned on using it for
parts, pulling the whole powertrain and
axles out to have as spares, and then
scrapping the body. Here’s most of what I
did to it….. CLEANED the inside out
really well, got rid of the old
smells; Put in Rugged Ridge molded fit
floor liners and cargo liner; Bought new
keys and old used factory remotes, had
remotes programmed by dealer; Installed
leather front seats from a 2000 Grand
Cherokee (junkyard); Bolted down console
properly as it wasn’t attached at
all; Replaced broken console lid latch
and installed missing bumpers;
(junkyard); Repaired broken switches and
cut wiring in overhead console; Replaced
headliner fabric/foam; Installed new
Infinity speakers; Installed a steering
wheel that wasn’t split open
(junkyard); Replaced three non-working
power door lock/latch assemblies (wrecked
one); Replaced rear wiper motor (found it
was good, fixed bad wiring); Replaced two
door panels with ones in better condition
(wrecked one); Replaced all interior
panels in cargo area and one in rear
seating area (wrecked one); Replaced
interior rear hatch panel (wrecked
one); Replaced rear wiper switch and fog
light switch (junkyard); Installed new
fog lights; CLEANED all the oil off the
underside from all the oil
leaks; Installed new rear main seal, oil
pump, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket,
and oil filter adapter seals; Installed
new oil pressure sending unit; Installed
new PCV and crankcase breather unit,
replaced a few old vacuum
connections; Installed new air
filter; Installed new serpentine
accessory drive belt; Installed new front
hub/bearing assemblies and front axle
shaft u-joints; Installed new rear axle
bearings and seals; Serviced both
differentials; Serviced transfer
case; Serviced transmission; Installed
new oxygen sensors, new cat back exhaust,
and patched leaking exhaust
header; Installed new spark plugs, plug
wires, cap and rotor, and ignition
coil; Replaced all front end components,
ball joints, tie rods, steering
linkage; Installed new brake pads and
brake shoes, adjusted parking
brake; Painted differential covers and
rear brake drums; Flushed cooling system
twice; Installed new radiator and heater
hoses, thermostat, radiator cap, and
thermostat housing; Installed new motor
mounts and transmission mount; Seafoam’ed
the top end; Installed 265/75R15 all
terrain tires and new 15x8”
wheels; Installed new fender flares,
front/rear bumper end caps, and rear
bumper; Installed smoked marker lights
and tail lights; Had front windows and
windshield tinted to match rear factory
tint; Installed roof rack; Disassembled
everything and had the bumps and bruises
taken out and body repainted
