JEEP HISTORY
I bought my first Jeep (1983 CJ) when I
was 23 and in my third year of college. I
paid $500 for her and she basically had no
floor, wouldn't idle, and the brakes
didn't work. After a couple weeks of
welding, reassembling the rear brakes
correctly, and rebuilding the carb I have
a "perfect" beach runner for
about $800. I rocked that CJ every summer
for about 5 years before the tub was too
far gone and I got tired of band aiding
her back together. Enter in my YJ
project. I picked up a rust free 1990 YJ
for $1000 that, again wouldn't idle and
had a blown auto trans because of all the
in gear restarts of the engine by the
previous owner. It was "pimped
out" by the previous owner with a
body lift, tube bumpers, 31"x14"
tires, and "street glow" lites
underneath... Gheetooo... I ripped all
that crap off. Stripped the Jeep down to
the bare frame then cut everything but the
rear spring pockets and body mounts of the
frame rails and started over. In went a GM
14 bolt rear, Ford high pinion 60 (both
full width, mounted SOA), NV4500 5 speed,
and a bored and stoked 450hp/500ft-lb
Chevy 383. I also converted the tub to a
custom made CJ-7 dash and hung a CJ-7 nose
on her. Then I fabbed up custom front tube
fenders and rear flares to cover the
37x12.5 Irok's on recentered HUMMV double
bead lock wheels. The entire tub and front
fenders except for the cowl and rear
sections was coated with pray on bed
liner. Everything else was painted in a
Ford metallic green that I liked.
