JEEP HISTORY
Oh, I just bought this trashy Jeep from
somebody around the corner. It was the
week I was getting married and the Jeep
was only $2000; it's my wife's wedding
present, since she's always wanted one.
It's a YJ Laredo, coffee brown, very
little rust (that's its main good
feature). My father-in-law put several
hundred dollars into the Jeep while we
were on our honeymoon--he fixed the
brakes, which were essentially dead, had
the valve cover fixed, rear end tightened
up (supposedly the bolts were only finger
tight...), oil pan replaced; it leaks
almost nothing now. I had to get the
windshield replaced, and the hinges broke
while taking the old one off, so I
discovered the joy of dismantling the
entire dashboard to get at the f!#$#!!!
nuts on the inside. I put in a new radio
and speakers while I was at it. We got
a hard top and full doors for $500 off
this dude in northeast Tennessee--that was
a trip. SOB overheated four times on the
way down. We were going to try to get to
Nashville to stay with my godfather and my
aunt, but that didn't happen. However,
Uncle Joe did suggest turning the heater
on, which to our surprise made the
overheating manageable. Finally got to
the guy's place the next morning. Man and
his wife came out to talk to us; very nice
people. Out in the yard is this younger
fellow welding something on the bottom of
an old Isuzu SUV, IIRC. Huge shirtless
blond guy named Biggun (that's how John
introduced him...) was also in attendance
drinking his breakfast beer. (8:45 am)
John tells me that the Jeep whose top I am
getting, "all it needed was a new
engine and it ran great." I believe
he uses this Jeep for "time
traveling," which I daresay is an
activity for which the hardtop is
decidedly optional. There was also a dune
buggy parked next to the big tree in the
front yard, which had also been recently
used for "time travelling,"
which may have had something to do with
the large number of beer cans in the yard
around it. (Didn't Dr. Brown put beer in
Mr. Fusion at the end of the first
movie?) Anyway, since then I've put in
a new radiator, finally tracked down the
original problem to the ignition
module,...,..., well, I got the mice and
their nest cleaned out of the dashboard,
now the engine's running lean, may need to
re-jet it, but of course it won't be that
simple...
