Well, the "new" XJ is home--a 1990 Wagoneer Limited
(Woody!). Let's just say the previous owner was a
little "optimistic" regarding its condition. First, it
was advertised as a "1993"--after getting the VIN, I
called him on that and got another $100 off the
price--sigh!
Well, anyway, we drive the 170 odd miles to go look at
it. It was advertised as being from SC and having
little rust--well, it might have spent it's first year
or so in SC, but a lot of the rest were spent in the
rust belt. The rockers had a hole covered by electrical
tape, and some bondo on the other one--not too bad.
Now, we get to the cargo area. First, the carpet is
gone--never mentioned that in the ad, and there is a
4x6" hole in the floor, right at the leaf spring
attachment point--sigh! Both bumpers are dented in, and
rusty. There are a few random rust spots here and here
on the body--mostly surface rust--sigh!
Excellent running engine seems to have a max of 40lbs
of oil pressue hot--could be better, but OK. It also
surges at idle and runs rough--hopefully a tune-up will
take care of that--sigh!
It was said to have the leather interior--well, it has
the leather/cloth seats and the driver's seat has been
replaced by some unknown non-Limited seat and the power
controls zip-tied to the base--sigh!
Let's see, what else? Oh, the headliner does not
sag--it is fricken' GONE! Hmm--no mention of that in
the ad, nor of the layer of grime on
everything--sigh!
So, of course, I bought the thing anyway LOL! It got
great mileage on the highway and really didn't run TOO
bad. The CC is messed up--I suspect a vacuum leak. I
did try the xfer case and that shifted fine. The tranny
fluid looked good and the tranny shifts fine.
The fix-up list:
Oil and filter--done.
Change ATF
Change xfer case fluid
Change diff oil
Replace air filter
Replace fuel filter
Replace dist cap and rotor
Replace plug wires
Replace spark plugs (Champion Truck plugs)
Put my 235x75 BFG ATs on
Replace front sway bar bushings (24mm)
Shop for new front/rear bumpers
Weld patch in cargo area
Source replacement headliner
Possibly swap in my extra set of real leather seats
from a '92 Limited, though they are black
Replace steering wheel (leather really nasty and cut
up)
Herc cargo area
Oh, and for some reason the driver's side coil spring
is rubbing on the "frame"--sigh!
The joys of dealing with 18 y/o Jeeps!...
