JEEP HISTORY
This Jeep sat in the front yard of a house
behind a stand of trees for more than 3
years as my wife and I commuted past it
everyday. It had 2 foot high grass growing
all around it. One day my wife called me
and said, "It's for sale." She
didn't need to be more specific. On my
way home I drove past it. Several guys
were looking under the hood and crawling
around it. For the next week fewer and
fewer people were looking at it so I
stopped by. Here's the very short run
down: - 74,000 original miles - No
rust to speak of on the tub. - Engine
didn't turn over - Severe case of
blow-by - Windshield frame and back dash
plate leaked - Shocks were shot - Tires
were 15" original stock and dried
out - Hoses and tubes were original stock
and dried out - Paint and racing stripes
were faded - VIN report indicated this
was its 3rd engine The mechanic-in-law
came over the next day, looked it over and
said, "If you don't buy it today, I
will and I won't sell it to you". So
I reached into my pocket (figuratively
speaking) and shelled out $1800. We
hooked it up to my wife's 4-Runner, towed
it about 3 miles, got pulled over, issued
a ticket, flat bedded it the remaining 2
miles and pushed it the garage. The
in-law-mechanic swapped out the battery
from his car, squeezed the starter
solenoid and she fired up but sounded like
crap. Six months later, the wife gave
me a credit card and said, "make
every penny count. This card has a limit
and you're driving that Jeep until we can
get a newer one". To do that I went
stock all around and called in alot of
favors. Over the years, though, I snuck in
upgrades as components failed or gave out.
At 20 years old it's still my daily driver
complete with childseat. Make that 21
years old now.
