JEEP HISTORY
I bought my first 4wd when I was 17. It
was a 1959 Willy's PU with a 6"
spring lift and 33" tires. The guy I
bought it from did the suspension, tires
and installed a 283 Chevy. My next
vehicle was a brand new, stock, 1977
Datsun Pu (2wd). That didn't last long (I
had the off road bug bad). Within a few
years I hacked out the suspension and
installed a Dana 30, Dana 44 and a Dana 20
transfer case from a wrecked CJ. The motor
was changed to a turbocharged gm 3.8 V6
and a turbo 350 trans. I owned that truck
10 years to the month before it was
stolen. After that A few Toyota 4wd Pu's.
I moved to a different city and met a
gentleman who was in a jeep club. One
outing with them taught me two things.
First I needed a short wheel base and I
didn't know as much about 4wd as I thought
I did. I built a 74 cj5 first and it just
wasn't what I wanted. My next project was
a 79 cj7. This one worked good. Swapped
out the 304 for a 360, 999 automatic, Dana
300 transfer-case and 4.56 gears. This one
Ive had now for 15 years. It's seen all
the west coast trails and been a very good
rig. Two years ago I bought a 2004 Rubicon
and now I get to start over again.
