JEEP HISTORY
I bought a 1986 CJ-7 new in the summer of
86. I was active duty Coast Guard,
stationed in Mobile Alabama. It had a 258
I-6, 4-speed with overdrive, red paint,
black hardtop, steel doors, high back
bucket seats with console, and a rear
seat. Heavy duty cooling system.
Dana-30/44 331 gears. I drove it from
Mobile AL to Port Angeles Wa that summer
towing a three rail motorcycle trailer
with a 1984 Honda XL600 on it. After
getting settled in at AirSta Port Angeles
I installed 411’s and a LSD in the Dana
44, and ran 31” mud radials on the stock
suspension. This was when I learned how to
set up a gear-set. I installed 410’s in
Front Dana 30. In 1990 I transfered to
AirSta Savannah. Once settled in at
Savannah, I installed a 2.5” lift, and 33”
mud tread tires. I sold it in 1992 or so,
in that timeframe. I have missed that Jeep
ever since selling it, but life
happens. In 1987 I bought a 1969
Pontiac Firebird. Having two cars allowed
a backup vehicle should I break one, which
I did on occasion. I wheeled my Jeep very
hard on the weekends and raced the Pontiac
on occasion. I still have that
Firebird. 25 years later and I bought a
1 year old 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
SAHARA (JKU). It has silver Paint with a
black hardtop. Man, this new one is like a
luxury car compared to my old CJ-7. Jeeps
have come a long way since being bought by
Chrysler back in the eighties. It’s
now 2019 and I recently bought a red 1985
CJ-7. 258 automatic transmission, all
stock but fuel injection and 31” tires on
aftermarket 8” wagon wheels. It’s getting
a 9” in the back and a 44 in the front. I
am currently building a Mopar inline six
4.0/4.7. Planning on YJ SOA conversion
after the engine is in and ironed
out. It feels like I have come full
circle with this CJ-7, it’s an awesome
Jeep and I drive it every chance I
get! I traded my 2017 JKU for a 2015
challenger R/T Hemi. The Challenger is
awesome, kinda like the JKU, both very
nice cars.
