JEEP HISTORY
I had always liked Jeeps, but I was into
muscle-type cars mostly. I bought a new
1994 GC Ltd primarily to handle the snowy
conditions while going skiing then,
snowboarding now. I still use the GC for
that purpose. The TJ is just too small. I
had a 4x4 Toyota truck then and after
getting stuck in the snow and discovering
the virtues of the open differentials, I
was done with that. I ordered the Jeep GC
with the permanent 4 wheel drive system.
It is either on high or low, but 4 wheel
drive all the time. Never got stuck again
and it is still used routinely. Looks very
good still. Forward to 2005. I was
driving and a saw my Patriot Blue TJ with
a for sale sign and it was love at first
sight. Even though it was mostly stock,
(only the 32" wheels and tires and
some aluminum body panel cladding were
not) it looked great and it only had 44k
miles. It had the Rubicon logo on but it
turned out it was not a Rubicon, but by
then I was smitten. So I bought it for
$12K anyway. I did not know better at the
time although I have little regret. It has
been fun regardless. Much later, I found
out it at least had a D-44 out back. Lots
of $$ later, it is a keeper for sure. It
is possible I will get a built-up beater
for trail-only use in the future. As the
build has progressed, I do not feel like
trashing my TJ, as I see some guys trash
theirs. It is plenty capable now, but
with the d-30 in front, what I am willing
to take on is somewhat limited. There is
plenty of fun terrain below the extreme
grades, so there is no shortage of fun
runs I can take on.
