JEEP HISTORY
I bought this used in 2002. The VM 2.5 TD
was powerful but had overheating problems.
Changing heads, sleeves and gaskets never
solved the problem. After a very costly
rebuild, the lower bearings seized up and
we gave up on it. We tried a Mitsubishi
2.3l turbo diesel in 2007 for 3 weeks but
it did not line up well enough with the
AX-15 transmission and the clutch
disintegrated. It sat until we got the
idea to put the Toy engine in it in
2008-9. It now has a Toyota 2.4 liter
diesel (mechanical injection) with a Jeep
AX-5 gearbox from a junked XJ. It only
tops out at 65mph but gets 22 mpg, starts
everyday, and the motor is simple to fix
and to get parts for here in Africa. It
has about 83,000 miles on it since the
conversion.
